Do you have a favorite book of the Bible? I have to admit, my favorite is usually the one I am studying. 🙂 But, truth be told, I almost always come back to Philippians when I need encouragement.
Here are a few of the most encouraging verses from Philippians.
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel like the biggest mess in the world. It’s such a hope-filled promise that I am not finished yet but one day He will finish what He has begun in me.
And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ. Philippians 1:9-10
It’s the way we love others and love the Lord that shows what He is doing in us. Keep loving those people around you, keep giving more of yourself to Him — let your love grow and grow!
Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel. Philippians 1:27
It is one of my greatest desires to stand firm and to be passionate about the Gospel. Paul’s reminder of the value of standing firm together within the church is a reminder we are not called to do this on our own.
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Philippians 2:3
Humility … learning to count others as more significant than ourselves. What an awesome challenge to all of us.
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12
Sometimes this working out of our salvation is hard. I’ve done a lot of fear and trembling as I sought the Lord’s direction for my life. But it is good work, a good process through which we know Him more.
Do all things without grumbling or disputing. Philippians 2:14
No grumbling! When I start thinking how frustrated I am with someone or with a situation, this verse reminds me of the value of kind words and a servant heart.
Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ. Philippians 3:8
May I count EVERYTHING as loss compared to the SURPASSING worth of KNOWING Christ!!
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 3:20
This world is not our home. All the heartbreak, the hurting, the sorrow, the tears … it will all one day end!
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7
When the days are chaotic and the news is full of turmoil and life is spinning out of control, there is a peace in knowing Christ.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Philippians 4:23
One of my favorite benedictions.
