#MarriagePrayers: Luke 10:42

But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”—Luke 10:41-42

Ever been so busy doing “stuff” and trying to meet your spouse’s needs that you became distracted by the ways he or she was somehow falling short of what you felt you deserved? Have you ever been consumed with all you do and all your spouse isn’t doing and then lost sight of why you do it all in the first place?

Here Jesus rebukes Martha’s anxiety, her busyness, by pointing out the alternative, which happens to be exactly what her sister was doing. I’m sure that in her distraction Martha loved hearing, “Hey you may be doing good things but you’re wrong and your sister is right”

Martha was distracted, Mary was sitting.
Martha was anxious, Mary was listening.
Martha was busy. Mary was still.
Martha was consumed with her sister.
Mary was consumed with Jesus.

Mary chose that one necessary thing and His name was Jesus.

But what was the real difference between Martha and Mary?

Both sisters made a choice. Martha chose to do for the Savior. Mary chose to sit with the Savior. Making the right choice is often difficult but we must be willing to do so. Often we want to live life just as it comes our way. We must be intentional to sit quietly and listen at the feet of Jesus. Only in choosing the necessary thing will we truly love our spouses as Christ loved the church.

Mary had chosen the good portion and Jesus said it would not be taken away from her.

Today, will you chose the one necessary thing, the good portion, that which can’t be taken away?

Father, Distractions abound —things that need to my attention, problems to solve, projects to complete. Give us strength to turn our eyes from these distractions and turn them completely to You. Forgive us for pursuing busyness in an effort to appear spiritual more than we pursue You. Forgive us for not choosing the good portion, for neglecting the one necessary thing. Today may we choose wisdom, peace, security. Today may we choose the one necessary thing. Today may we choose to sit and listen. Today may we cho0se that which can’t be taken away from me. Today may we choose You. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Today may we choose the one necessary thing. #MarriagePrayers based on Luke 10:42 Share on X
