My beloved is mine, and I am his …
Song of Songs 2:16
For our tenth anniversary my husband bought us rings with this verse inscribed in Hebrew. Often I am asked about my ring. I always think it is such a privilege to share what the ring says and when I got it.
Next year we’ll celebrate our 20th anniversary {yes, I was a child bride!}. Both Scott and I have grandparents who have been married more than 60 years. My parents will celebrate their 44th anniversary in April.
Long marriages are a part of our family culture. Divorce is the exception not the rule. I’m thankful for that legacy. We’ve watched family members fight through difficult seasons of marriage. We’ve had a few dark days of our own. But we have persevered. Because the covenant matters.
Marriage isn’t easy. It demands more from us than we could ever expect when we stand in front of a church and proclaim, “’till death do us part.”
That’s why it’s so important to invest in our relationship. To value the friendship we share … to do the little things … to build each other up.
Maybe I’m a little old fashioned but the truth is, I love the idea of belonging to my husband. I am thankful to know he calls me his. I love that he believes in me and encourages me and speaks even hard truth into my life. I love that at the end of the day, it’s the two of us.
