God Is Able by Priscilla Shirer {Book Review}

God Is Able by Priscilla Shirer || Review by Teri Lynne Underwood

As 2013 winds down and I start looking ahead to 2014, I find myself longing for more of what really matters. More laughing with my daughter, more lingering conversations with friends, more holding hands with my husband … just more of the things money can’t buy. This year has been been filled with some incredible moments and accomplishments but it also brought some of the most difficult days I’ve faced as an adult.

When I started reading Priscilla Shirer’s latest book, God Is Able, the first sentences I underlined were these:

I’ve found my worst fears confirmed. I’m insufficient, outmatched, and incapable of fixing everything. {p. 6}

Yeah, that. Like a ton of bricks in my heart.

I’m a fixer. I like things orderly and resolved. I hate conflict and bad endings. I want everyone to be happy and satisfied.

And this year, more than any other, I’ve learned I can’t fix everything.

I can’t make marriages work. I can’t make middle school girls be nice. I can’t make Algebra easy to understand. I can’t make hurt feelings fade.  I can’t make words spoken in haste disappear.

I can’t.

But God … well, God is able.

Shirer’s book explores Ephesians 3:20-21.

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

To Him who is able.

I don’t know where you are right now. Maybe the holidays loom ahead of you like a storm. Maybe your financial situation is filled with uncertainty. Maybe your children are wayward. Maybe your marriage is crumbling. Maybe your health is failing. Maybe your heart is broken. Maybe you are just tired of wearing the mask of “fine.”

Whatever it is, God is able.

He’s able to bring peace and comfort. He’s able to bring healing and hope. He is able is meet you where you are and offer you His love, perfect and true.

If you’ve been struggling to find God in the midst of your circumstances and situation, if you’ve reached the end of you and realized you desperately need Him, this book is for you.

Because, dear friend, you are not able … but God is!

How has God shown you He is able?
